Sól in old Norse, representing the viking rune letter S, and sōwilō in proto-Germanic elder futhark means sun. The "long-branch" rune, mainly found in Denmark, has an S-shape made with three strokes, where the first and last strokes are vertical and the middle stoke slightly upwards slanting from the left to right.
