Philosophy
Our Name

jarðfé means buried treasure in old Norse. The first attested occurrence of jarðfé appears in Snorri Sturluson’s Ynglinga saga, where he describes the powers of Odin:

Óðinn vissi um alt jarðfé, hvar fólgit var, ok hann kunni þau ljóð, er upp laukst fyrir honum jörðin, ok björg ok steinar, ok haugarnir, ok batt hann með orðum einum þá er fyrir bjoggu, ok gékk inn ok tók þar slíkt er hann vildi.

Odin knew about all buried treasures and where they were hidden, and he knew the songs which would open up the earth, mountains, stones and hills, and just with his words he bound those who lived there so he could take what he wanted.

Odin knew about all buried treasures and where they were hidden, and he knew the songs which would open up the earth, mountains, stones and hills, and just with his words he bound those who lived there so he could take what he wanted.

Directly translated jarðfé means “earth wealth”, invoking an idea of the connection between humans and the natural world – the value of the earth to us. This interpretation conjures an idea of a connection to the land and our origins, an appreciation for the beauty of nature and a sense of the importance of stewardship and preservation – a strong inspiration for our products.

How we do it
Our production process is built on celebrating traditional craft

Sand casting is an ancient technique involving crafting molds using compacted sand. The process includes creating a mold from an item and imprinting this in the sand. Molten metal is then poured into the mold before the item is cooled and finished.

Forging is a time consuming process of shaping metal through controlled heating and hammering. From a raw piece of metal, the item is heated to soften the metal, before it is hammered to stretch and shape it. This process is repeated until the item has achieved its desired form. Lastly it is tempered to increase the durability of the item.

Stone casting was a very common technique for jewelry making during the viking period and earlier. The process entails taking a block of soapstone or other soft rock and carefully carving into it intricate patterns and designs before filling the mold with molten metal.
